A Towel bar or soap dish can be a really nice accessory to a tiled bathroom wall. Unless of course, they are broken, cracked or loosened up. I you are careful you can replace them without doing any damage to existing tiles.
If you have a flush set accessory like a soap dish you will want to replace it with the same size or a little bigger to aviod exposing the backing. Towel bars are usually mounted on the surface and it is recommended that you get the same size also so use can reuse the same tiles.
By doing this you will save yourself extra work and the project will be a breeze. Use plenty of masking tape on nearby existing tiles to keep them from loosening or cracking. Work slowly and carefully and the project will an easy one.
Removing an Old Soap Dish from a tile wall
You will want to protect the surrounding tiles by using a lot of masking tape on the surrounding tiles to protect them. Then you need to remove any old grout or calk around the soap dish. Use a small chisel with a hammer to tap the soap dish loose until it comes free.
Remove any tape and clean the area with a putty knife. Apply the adhesive to the back of the new soap dish and press it into place with masking tape. Let it dry for at least 24 hours and the grout your new dish and enjoy it.
Replacing an Old Towel Bar
Use a grout saw to remove the old grout. Then use plenty of masking tape to secure the surrounding tiles, so they will not come lose or crack. Remove the old tile bar, by unscrewing or using a chisel on adhesive attached brackets. Clean the area very good.
You will want to use the old screw holes for the new brackets if possible. If not, you will need to drill new holes that will fit the new hollow wall anchors. Make sure to level the new bathroom towel bar and also if you have to drill new holes make sure to use the lowest setting on the drill. An electric drill with a carbon tipped masonry bit is recommended for drilling holes in tile.
If your using adhesive mounted go ahead and apply the adhesive and press the brackets into place. If your using screw mounted go ahead and attach the anchors and screw the bracket into place. Add the towel bar and grout over the tiles used. That all there is to it. A new look to your same bathroom can make a really nice difference.
